Nukupu'u - Fringillidae Hemignathus lucidus

An original painted in 1994. I could easily have placed this and the previous image with my other "Originals," but wanted instead to add to the "Birds with Artifacts" category. The artifact is a wood tiki, probably carved from milo wood. I have as yet been unable to determine the significance of the tiki.

The Nukupu'u (bird only), besides looking beautiful, is somewhat similar to the Nukupu'u in a print titled "Nukupu'u and Koki'o'ke'oke'o" under "Other Bird Prints."

The Nukupu'u (Fringillidae Hemignathus lucidus) is a close relative of the Akialoa (Fringillidae Hemignathus obscurus), and one of many extinct members of the family/genus Fringillidae Hemignathus.

From various websites: the Nukupu'u is believed to be extinct.
