Hawaiian Duck - Anatidae Anas wyvilliana

These are a different species than the eastern black ducks or mallards, but they sure look similar to me! I am confident in the identification due to location and our guide (Carl Berg). They are considered a separate species, and hence are endemic to Hawaii, where the native name is koloa maoli. Unlike the mallard (to whom they are most closely related), the males and females have the same color pattern. Unlike both the mallard and black duck, they do not migrate.
