Nene (Hawaiian Goose) - Anatidae Nesochen sandvicensis

Once nearly extinct, the nene are being helped a lot by captive breed/release programs. They were readily seen and photographed at Kilowea Point. The neck feathers are very distinctive, and they are further distinguished from the Canada goose by the fact that they are about 2/3 the size of a Canada goose. The nene is endemic to Hawaii.
