An undated, but signed preliminary sketch of the Nukupu'u, probably made in 1990 as that is when prints were made of the final painting (the final image can be seen under in closeup underneath the sketch.) I like the small color wash and annotations about the colors to be used; the colors planned for the Nukupu'u stood, those for the Koki'o'ke'oke'o changed. The birds were rendered almost exactly like the sketch, but the layout of the Koki was significantly modified.
The Nukupu'u (Fringillidae Hemignathus lucidus) is a close relative of the Akialoa (Fringillidae Hemignathus obscurus), and one of many extinct members of the family/genus Fringillidae Hemignathus.
