An undated (but signed) preliminary sketch of Akiapola'au. Probably sketched around 2009-2010, as this sketch was part of Marian's preparation for the Akiapola'au in the Living Endemic Birds of Hawaii (LEBH) series. Beneath is a closeup of the final LEBH painting.
I have deliberately not cropped and filled this and the following sketch, thus providing a better idea of how Marian prepares for a painting, often using whatever paper is at hand.
From the US Audubon Society website: "A member of the Hawaiian honeycreeper family (Drepanididae) that has evolved to fill the niche occupied by woodpeckers in many other parts of the world. Endangered and found only on the island of Hawaii."
