Kakawahie and Akepa

Print from Frohawk's Birds of Hawaii

Kakawahie - Fringillidae Paroreomyza flammea; Akepa - Fringillidae Loxops coccineus

From wikipedia.org: Akepa are usually found from 1,500 to 2,200 meters above sea level. They are non-territorial, and group male displays have been often observed in the beginning of the breeding season. They participate in mixed-species flocks during the non-breeding season. They are highly endangered.

The Kakawahie (or Molokai Creeper) is at the top; the Akepa at the bottom. Perhaps the middle bird is a female Akepa (by pose).

Marian Berger's paintings of Akepas can be found on my website at: Living Endemic.
