Apple Snail Laying Eggs

Snail kites, crocodiles and some fish live primarily on apple snails. The hermaphroditic snails climb a reed to lay their eggs at night, taking about five hours to do so. During this time their shell fills with air, so when they return down the reed they are unable to get back under the water, forming easy picking for snail kites the next morning.
