Crane Hawk - Accipitridae Geranospiza caerulescens

The crane hawk is rarely seen in Trinidad although it is common in Venezuela. In 2002 this image was the only photographic evidence of the crane hawk in Trinidad. Note the white crescent across the base of the primaries of the flying bird, which is diagnostic of this species, and the dark bill, red eye, unbarred underparts and red legs, which distinguish this species from Gray Hawk.

Photo taken with film, March 2002.
