These modern-day "mules" are used to keep ships from hitting the sides of the canal. Many of the ships have just two feet of clearance on each side. Notice the two cables running from the mule to the ship it is guiding. Depending on the size of the ship, from two to eight mules are used for a ship going through each canal lock.
