Comparison to Ching's Style
PreviousNext
Below the line are eight images, two each of:
- Alala (Giclees)
- Akohekohe (lithograph & Giclee)
- 'I'iwi (Giclees)
- Po'o-uli (Original & Giclee)
In each case the image to the left is by Marian Berger, that to the right by Patrick Ching. Four very nice images images by each of two excellent artists.
I see the following style differences:
- Marian works primarily in watercolor, Patrick primarily in oils; To me, even when printed as a Giclee, it shows.
- Marian emphasizes the bird with respect to the foliage far more than Patrick, who depicts his birds with a lot of very beautiful scenery.
- Marian usually depicts a bird and some foliage on white; Patrick's paintings utilize every square inch of canvas (paper for the Giclee).
- Marian's use of color is subdued relative to Patrick's, who uses very bold colors.
- Marian tends to paint her birds somewhat in the style of a more artistic Audubon, while Patrick paints towards photo-realism.
