The Corsair was designed to be a dominent fighter, so they started with a very powerful engine (for the time). However, when the propellar that would go with the engine was designed, it was sufficiently large as to dig into the ground. To allow for the propeller, the landing gear were lengthened. Unfortunately, the new landing gear were too large to retract into the wings after takeoff. The wings were then bent down to shorten the landing gear. It worked, and also created the famous "Corsiar Look."
